As I stood at the edge of the Atacama Desert in Chile, the sky transformed before my eyes. Paul Bogard, author of The End of Night, has dedicated his life to exploring this very question. "For almost 20 years, I've been writing about dark skies and light pollution," he shares. "I've seen some truly breathtaking sights – southern Morocco's desert skies so plush with stars they still seem like a dream – but the reality is that most people can no longer see a starry night due to artificial light."
The culprit behind this loss of connection is not just the sheer amount of light we waste into the sky. It's also about the scale and scope of our urbanization. As cities expand, they cast their glow further and further out, illuminating even the most remote areas. The Bortle scale, developed by amateur astronomer John E. Bortle, measures the darkness of a location from 1 (the darkest) to 9 (the brightest). Most people live in areas that fall into the top three categories – bright enough to make stargazing impossible.
But there are those who refuse to give up on the night sky. Babak Tafreshi, founder of The World at Night project, has spent years documenting the beauty of dark skies around the world. "I've been fortunate enough to witness some incredible celestial displays," he says. "From the Racetrack in Death Valley to the Canary Islands, I've seen the night sky in all its glory. But even in these locations, light pollution is a growing concern."
As we lose our connection to the night sky, what do we stand to gain?
