Feline Frenzy at American University of Beirut: Over 1,000 Cats Roam Campus
BEIRUT, Lebanon - In a unique phenomenon that has become an integral part of the campus culture, more than 1,000 cats have made the American University of Beirut (AUB) their home.
According to university officials, the feline population began to grow about 30 years ago when AUB started taking in stray cats abandoned during Lebanon's civil war. The influx accelerated last year with the outbreak of conflict between Israel and Lebanon, resulting in hundreds more cats being brought to the campus gates.
"We've had a long-standing tradition of caring for these cats," said Dr. Fadlo Khuri, president of AUB. "We believe it's our responsibility to provide them with food, shelter, and medical care."
The university's sprawling campus, featuring towering trees and lush green spaces leading down to the Mediterranean Sea, provides an ideal environment for the feline population. While some students have expressed concerns about the sheer number of cats, others see them as a beloved part of campus life.
"It's not uncommon to see cats lounging in classrooms or strolling through the halls," said AUB student, Rania Moussa. "They're such a big part of our community."
AUB staff work tirelessly to spay, neuter, and vaccinate the cats, with many also being adopted out to local families. However, not all students are fond of the feline presence.
"I'm not a cat person," admitted AUB student, Ali Hassan. "But I understand why they're here and how much joy they bring to others."
The phenomenon has garnered international attention, with some experts praising AUB's commitment to animal welfare while others have raised concerns about the potential health risks associated with large numbers of stray cats.
"It's a remarkable example of how a university can make a positive impact on its community," said Dr. Andrew Rowan, executive vice president for programs at the Humane Society International. "However, we also need to consider the long-term sustainability and potential health implications."
AUB officials acknowledge these concerns but emphasize their commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for both students and animals.
"We're proud of our feline friends and will continue to care for them," said Dr. Khuri. "They're an integral part of our university family."
As the situation continues to unfold, AUB remains dedicated to finding solutions that balance the needs of its human and animal populations.
