Steam Drops Support for Windows 32-bit Next Year
In a move that will affect only a small fraction of its massive user base, Steam announced today that it will no longer support the 32-bit version of Windows. As of January 1, users running Windows 10 32-bit on their computers will no longer receive updates or technical support from Valve.
According to Steam's own hardware survey, just 0.01 percent of its daily users - approximately 3,600 gamers - are still using the 32-bit version of Windows 10. This tiny percentage is a far cry from the 36 million daily users who will continue to receive updates and support without issue.
"We've made this decision because core features in Steam rely on system drivers and other libraries that are not supported on 32-bit versions of Windows," said Valve in a statement. "This change frees up resources for us to focus on more important things."
Microsoft is also ending support for Windows 10, including security updates, on October 14 this year. The company has been phasing out the 32-bit version of its operating system since 2015.
The decision by Steam marks a significant shift in the gaming industry's reliance on 64-bit systems. With the introduction of Windows NT in 1993, Microsoft began offering 32-bit versions of its operating system. However, with the release of Windows 11, the company has dropped support for 32-bit altogether.
While this change may seem insignificant to most gamers, it highlights the ongoing evolution of the gaming industry's technical requirements. As games become increasingly complex and demanding, developers are forced to adapt to new hardware standards.
Steam users running Windows 10 64-bit will continue to receive updates and support without interruption. However, those still using the 32-bit version of Windows 10 should consider upgrading to a supported operating system or switching to a different platform altogether.
