California Bans Most Law Enforcement from Wearing Masks on Duty
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill into law that prohibits most law enforcement officers, including those with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), from wearing face masks while on duty. The ban takes effect on January 1, 2026.
The legislation aims to prevent "secret police" from operating in the state, according to Governor Newsom. However, US Attorney Bill Essayli, a Trump appointee, disputed the law's validity, stating that California has no jurisdiction over federal agencies and that the ban will have no impact on ICE operations.
