In one tweet, Trump complained that Bondi's department had not taken action against these individuals, saying "all talk, no action." He then announced plans to appoint his former personal attorney, Lindsey Halligan, to replace US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Erik Siebert, who resigned amid pressure from the president to pursue a mortgage fraud indictment against James.
Siebert had declined to prosecute James, citing insufficient evidence. Trump claimed he fired Siebert, not the other way around.
The move has raised concerns among lawmakers and experts about the politicization of the Justice Department under Trump's administration. "This is a clear example of the president using his office to pressure the department into pursuing cases that are politically motivated," said Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
