At Paderborn Airport, a small car developed by NeMo (New Mobility) Paderborn, a coalition of 75 partners from academia and industry, demonstrated its capabilities in navigating through a designated area at a leisurely pace. The vehicle, equipped with cameras, radar, LiDAR sensors, and a high-performance computer, was able to brake on its own at the destination.
"It can go faster - 20 to 25 kilometers per hour is no problem," said Michael Spengler, an engineer from Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, who demonstrated the car's capabilities. "We're not just talking about speed; we're also looking at safety and efficiency."
The NeMo project has been in development since 2018, with a focus on creating a self-driving system that can be integrated into existing infrastructure. The team has made significant progress, but regulatory hurdles remain a major obstacle.
"Regulations are still lagging behind the technology," said Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder, a spokesperson for NeMo Paderborn. "We need clear guidelines and standards to ensure that autonomous vehicles can be safely integrated into our roads."
