MALAWI'S 85-YEAR-OLD EX-LEADER RETURNS TO POWER IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
LILONGWE, MALAWI - Peter Mutharika, the 85-year-old former president of Malawi, has returned to power after defeating incumbent Lazarus Chakwera in the country's presidential election held on September 16. According to official results announced on Wednesday, Mutharika secured 56.8% of the vote, while Chakwera garnered 33%.
Mutharika, who served as president from 2014 to 2020, conceded the election after Chakwera called him to acknowledge his defeat. "I have accepted the results and congratulate President-elect Mutharika on his victory," Chakwera said in a statement.
The election was marked by high voter turnout, with nearly 11 million eligible voters registering to cast their ballots. However, the campaign period was marred by controversy, with both candidates facing criticism over their policies and leadership styles.
Mutharika's return to power raises concerns about his ability to address Malawi's pressing issues, including a multi-year economic crisis, high inflation, essential goods shortages, climate disasters, and international aid cuts. Critics argue that Mutharika's policies during his previous tenure failed to deliver tangible results for the country.
"We are worried about President-elect Mutharika's return to power because of his track record on economic management," said Dr. Kondwani Munthali, a political analyst at the University of Malawi. "His policies have been criticized for being too reliant on foreign aid and failing to address the root causes of poverty in our country."
In contrast, Mutharika's supporters argue that he has a proven track record of leadership and is best equipped to navigate Malawi's complex economic challenges.
"President-elect Mutharika has a deep understanding of our country's economy and has implemented policies that have led to significant growth and development," said James Njolomole, a spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Party. "We are confident that he will build on this momentum and take Malawi to even greater heights."
As Mutharika prepares to take office, his administration faces the daunting task of addressing the country's pressing issues. With international aid cuts looming, Mutharika will need to demonstrate his ability to implement effective economic policies and manage the country's resources sustainably.
The official inauguration ceremony for President-elect Mutharika is scheduled to take place on October 1, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Malawi's political history.
