Cocoa Supplements Show Surprising Anti-Aging Potential
In a groundbreaking study published on September 27, 2025, researchers from Mass General Brigham revealed that daily cocoa extract supplements rich in flavanols can reduce key inflammation markers in older adults. This finding has sparked excitement among health experts and enthusiasts alike, as it points to the potential of flavanol-rich foods in protecting the heart.
According to the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), participants who received daily cocoa supplements over several years showed a significant decrease in hsCRP, an inflammatory marker linked to cardiovascular disease. This anti-inflammatory effect is believed to be the key to the heart-protective benefits of flavanols.
"We were surprised by the magnitude of the reduction in inflammation markers," said Dr. Elizabeth Mostofsky, lead author of the study and a researcher at Mass General Brigham. "This suggests that cocoa extract supplements may have a role in protecting the heart and potentially slowing down age-related chronic diseases."
The study's findings reinforce the value of plant-based foods rich in flavanols for healthier aging. Flavanols are compounds found in high amounts in dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and other cocoa products.
"Cocoa has been touted as a superfood for years, but this study provides concrete evidence of its benefits," said Dr. Mostofsky. "We're not saying that everyone should start taking cocoa supplements, but it's clear that flavanols have anti-inflammatory properties that can be beneficial for cardiovascular health."
The COSMOS study involved over 2,000 participants aged 40-80 who received either a daily cocoa extract supplement or a multivitamin placebo. The results showed that the cocoa group experienced significant reductions in inflammation markers, including hsCRP.
While the study's findings are promising, experts caution against overemphasizing the benefits of cocoa supplements. "This is just one piece of evidence in a larger puzzle," said Dr. Mostofsky. "We need more research to understand the long-term effects and optimal dosages."
The study's results have sparked interest among consumers and industry leaders alike. Sales of cocoa-based products are expected to surge, with companies like Hershey's and Ghirardelli already capitalizing on the trend.
As for the average consumer, Dr. Mostofsky advises moderation: "While cocoa supplements may be beneficial, it's essential to maintain a balanced diet and lifestyle. Enjoy dark chocolate in moderation, but don't overdo it – we're not advocating for a daily dose of cocoa."
The COSMOS study's findings will be presented at the upcoming American Heart Association conference, where researchers will delve deeper into the anti-inflammatory effects of flavanols.
