Moldova's Pro-EU Party Takes Lead in Election as Vote Counting Under Way
CHISINAU, Moldova - The governing pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) has taken the lead in Moldova's parliamentary election with 46 percent of the votes, compared to 27 percent for the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc, according to the country's electoral commission. With 90 percent of votes counted, the PAS is poised to maintain its grip on power.
"We are confident that our party will win a majority in parliament," said Natalia Moldovan, a PAS spokesperson. "Our platform has resonated with Moldovans who want to see their country integrate further into Europe."
The election, which was marked by claims of Russian interference, is seen as a crucial test for the pro-EU forces in Moldova. The PAS has been accused of being too close to Brussels and neglecting domestic issues.
"The people have spoken, and they want change," said Vladimir Voronin, leader of the opposition Socialist Party. "The PAS has failed to deliver on its promises, and we will continue to fight for a more just society."
Background: Moldova's parliamentary election is viewed as a geopolitical choice between a path to the European Union or a drift back into Moscow's fold. The country has been plagued by corruption and economic woes in recent years.
According to the Central Electoral Commission, over 1.59 million voters, about 51.9 percent of eligible voters, had cast their ballots by the time polls closed at 9 pm (18:00 GMT). This included 264,000 Moldovans who voted in polling stations set up abroad.
The pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc has accused the PAS of using its control over state media to influence the outcome of the election. "This is a rigged election," said Igor Dodon, leader of the Patriotic Bloc. "We demand a recount and an investigation into the irregularities."
As vote counting continues, the PAS remains optimistic about its chances. "We are confident that our party will emerge victorious," Moldovan said.
The outcome of the election will have significant implications for Moldova's future. If the PAS maintains its lead, it is likely to continue its pro-EU policies and push for closer integration with the European Union. However, if the Patriotic Bloc gains ground, it could signal a shift towards Moscow's influence in the region.
The electoral commission has announced that vote counting will continue throughout the night, and the final results are expected to be released by Monday morning.
