MASERU, Lesotho - Puseletso Seema, known as the "Queen of Famo," was once a household name in this tiny African mountain kingdom. As the first woman to break into the male-dominated music industry, she brought joy and pride to the Basotho people with her unique blend of pastoral accordion music. However, the 77-year-old grandmother's life has taken a drastic turn, and she now resides in a small, run-down home outside the capital.
Seema's story is not an isolated one. The Famo genre, which originated from traditional shepherd songs, has become embroiled in gang wars and violence, threatening the very fabric of Lesotho's musical heritage. According to local reports, rival gangs have been using Famo music as a recruitment tool, with some even forming their own bands.
"It's a sad state of affairs," said Seema, who still performs at local taverns, known as shabeens. "Famo was meant to bring people together, not tear them apart."
Seema's rise to fame began in the 1960s, when she became one of the first women to play the accordion in Lesotho. Her unique style blended traditional Basotho music with modern influences, captivating audiences across the country.
