Greece Faces General Strike as Unions Protest Reforms

A general strike is set to bring much of Greece to a grinding halt on October 1, as labor unions protest government reforms aimed at increasing flexibility in the country's labor market. The strike, called by six major trade unions, will see ships remain in port, planes grounded, and trains halted.
The dispute centers around plans by Labor Minister Niki Kerameos to introduce legislation allowing for a 13-hour workday on 37 days per year, citing benefits for employees. However, union leaders reject the proposal, arguing it would lead to exhaustion and decreased productivity among workers.
"We can't work 13 hours a day, and we don't expect that from our employees," said Anni, owner of beauty salon "64" in central Athens. "I doubt any of my clients would be satisfied with the work of an exhausted beautician either."
Kerameos has maintained that the proposal is intended to provide flexibility for employees, but union leaders remain unconvinced.
"This is a thinly veiled attempt by the government to erode workers' rights and increase profits for employers," said Yiannis Panagopoulos, president of the Greek Confederation of Labor. "We will not stand idly by while our members are exploited."
The strike is the latest in a series of protests against government reforms aimed at liberalizing Greece's labor market. Since July 2024, employees in industry and retail have been allowed to work up to six days per week, with some employers opting for longer hours.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' conservative government has touted the changes as necessary to boost economic growth and competitiveness. However, critics argue that the reforms prioritize corporate interests over workers' rights.
The general strike is expected to cause significant disruptions across Greece, with many businesses and services likely to be affected. The outcome of the dispute remains uncertain, with negotiations between union leaders and government officials ongoing.
As the country teeters on the brink of industrial action, one thing is clear: the fate of Greece's labor market hangs in the balance.
