Google Unveils New Nest Doorbell and Cams with Enhanced AI Capabilities
Yesterday, Google released three new security cameras as part of its Nest suite: the Nest Cam Indoor (3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (2nd gen), and Nest Doorbell (3rd gen). These devices boast improved 2K HDR video resolution and a wider field of view, enabling better image quality and opening the door to advanced AI features.
The new cameras were designed to provide "rich, detailed data" for Google's multimodal AI, which uses this information to generate more accurate alerts and enable faster identification of important moments. According to Google, these devices have been rated as first in their class by DxOMARK for image quality.
"We're constantly pushing the boundaries of what our cameras can do," said a Google spokesperson. "With these new additions, we're giving users even more tools to stay safe and secure."
The Nest Cams feature 2,560 x 1,400 resolution with a 152-degree diagonal field of view (FOV), while the Nest Doorbell uses a 2,048 x 2,048 sensor with a 166-degree FOV. All three devices support up to 6x digital zoom and can digitally zoom in on subjects for enhanced alert capabilities.
Google claims that the combination of improved video resolution and AI capabilities boosts the cameras' ability to capture high-quality footage in low-light conditions by 120 percent. This enhancement is particularly significant, as it allows users to better monitor their surroundings at night or in areas with limited natural light.
The release of these new devices comes on the heels of Amazon's update to its Ring security camera suite earlier this week. While both companies are vying for dominance in the smart home security market, Google's focus on AI-driven features sets it apart from competitors.
"The integration of AI into security cameras is a game-changer," said Dr. Rachel Kim, a leading expert in AI and computer vision. "By leveraging machine learning algorithms to analyze video footage, these devices can provide users with more accurate and timely alerts."
As the smart home market continues to evolve, Google's new Nest Doorbell and Cams are poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of security technology.
The devices are available for purchase starting today, with prices ranging from $149.99 to $229.99, depending on the model.
