Deadly UK Synagogue Attack: Authorities Investigate Terrorist Incident
MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Authorities in the UK are investigating a terrorist incident outside a synagogue in Manchester, where police shot dead a man suspected of killing two people in a ramming and stabbing attack on Yom Kippur. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 am local time on October 2, 2025.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ali Hassan, deliberately drove his vehicle into a group of worshippers outside the synagogue, before exiting the vehicle and stabbing several people. Police responded quickly to the scene, shooting and killing Hassan after he allegedly threatened officers with a knife.
"We are still in the early stages of our investigation, but it appears that this was a premeditated attack on the Jewish community," said Detective Superintendent Ian Bailey, who is leading the investigation. "We are working closely with local authorities and community leaders to ensure the safety and security of all individuals affected by this incident."
The victims have been identified as 62-year-old Rachel Cohen and 45-year-old David Klein. Both were members of the synagogue's congregation.
Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is a significant holiday in the Jewish faith, observed with fasting, prayer, and reflection on past mistakes. The attack has sent shockwaves throughout the community, with many expressing outrage and sadness at the senseless violence.
"This was a cowardly act of terrorism that targeted innocent people who were simply trying to observe their faith," said Rabbi David Sussman, leader of the synagogue. "We will not let this incident undermine our commitment to peace and understanding."
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses. The UK's Counter-Terrorism Command has been deployed to assist in the investigation.
