In the sweltering heat of Rabat's city center, a sea of young faces gathers every evening, their voices echoing through the streets as they demand better healthcare and education. The protests, led by an anonymous collective known as GenZ 212, have been raging for weeks, leaving a trail of arrests, injuries, and damaged property in its wake. The Spark that Ignited the Protests
It all began on September 27, when GenZ 212 first called for protests on a Discord server. The group's message was simple: "We want better healthcare and education." But as the days went by, the protests grew in size and intensity, spreading from Rabat to Casablanca, Agadir, and smaller towns across Morocco.
For many of the protesters, the issues at hand are deeply personal. "My sister has been waiting for a kidney transplant for years," says Amira, a 19-year-old student who joined the protests in Rabat. "The healthcare system is broken, and it's not just about my family – it's about all of us."
A System Under Strain
Morocco's healthcare system has long been plagued by shortages of medical supplies, staff, and facilities. The country's education system also faces significant challenges, with many schools lacking basic infrastructure and resources.
But the protests are not just about these specific issues; they're also a cry for change in a society where young people feel marginalized and ignored. "We want to be heard," says Youssef, a 22-year-old protester from Casablanca. "We want our voices to matter."
The Government's Response
Morocco's Interior Ministry has reported over 400 arrests, 263 security officers injured, and 142 vehicles damaged as a result of the protests. Two people were killed on October 1 after police fired at protesters in the southern town of Lqliaa.
The government has accused GenZ 212 of being a "terrorist organization" and has vowed to take action against its leaders. But many Moroccans see the protests as a legitimate expression of dissent, and a necessary step towards creating change.
A New Generation of Activists
GenZ 212's use of social media platforms like Discord and Twitter has been instrumental in mobilizing young people across Morocco. The group's anonymity has also allowed it to operate outside the traditional bounds of politics, giving voice to a generation that feels disillusioned with the country's established parties.
"This is not just about healthcare and education," says Amira. "It's about creating a new system, one that listens to us and gives us a say in our own future."
The Future of Morocco
As the protests continue, it remains to be seen whether GenZ 212 will achieve its demands or face further repression from the government. But one thing is clear: this generation of Moroccans will not be silenced.
