The Purr-fect Storm: "Petunia" Brings Indie Drama to the Forefront
In a world where relationships are put to the test every day, one couple's struggle to save their beloved cat takes center stage in the indie drama "Petunia." Written and directed by emerging filmmaker Alec C. Cohen, this poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and resilience is set to captivate audiences at its SXSW premiere.
At the heart of the film are Charlie McDermott (The Middle), Vanessa Marano (Gilmore Girls, Switched at Birth), and John Ross Bowie (Speechless, The Big Bang Theory) as Alex and Lily, a young couple whose life is turned upside down when their cat falls critically ill. As they scramble to raise money for their pet's treatment, the pressure exposes cracks in their relationship, testing the limits of love and sacrifice.
"I was drawn to this project because it's a universal story that we can all relate to," says Cohen, who made his feature debut with "Petunia." "Who hasn't had to make tough decisions when faced with financial strain or illness? It's a powerful exploration of what it means to truly love and care for someone – or something."
The film also stars Joshua Burge (The Revenant), Lucy Loken (Young Sheldon), Lana McKissack (Countdown), Joy Brunson (This Is Us), Devon Werkheiser (Neds Declassified School Survival Guide), Chris Candy (Spaceballs 2) and Paul Eidi, all of whom bring their unique talents to the table.
For McDermott, who plays Alex, "Petunia" was a chance to explore the complexities of relationships. "As an actor, I'm always looking for roles that challenge me, and this one did just that," he says. "The script was so well-written, and Alec's direction brought out the best in all of us."
Marano, who plays Lily, agrees: "This film is a beautiful exploration of what it means to truly love someone – not just romantically, but also unconditionally." She adds, "Alec created an environment where we could explore these themes without fear of judgment. It was a true collaboration from start to finish."
Bowie, who plays the couple's eccentric neighbor, brings his signature wit and charm to the film. "I loved playing this character because he's so... unusual," he says with a chuckle. "Alec gave me the freedom to add my own flair to the role, which was wonderful."
As "Petunia" prepares to take its place on the SXSW stage, audiences can expect an emotional rollercoaster that will leave them thinking long after the credits roll. With its talented cast and poignant storyline, this indie drama is sure to resonate with viewers of all ages.
