Star Trek: Enterprise Spinoff Pitch Reveals New Details on Abandoned Project
A proposed Star Trek spinoff series, titled Star Trek: United, would have followed the journey of Captain Jonathan Archer after the events of Star Trek: Enterprise. According to producer Michael Sussman, who revealed more details about the project in a recent interview with the TrekMovies All Access Star Trek podcast, the show would have explored Archer's rise as one of the first presidents of the United Federation of Planets.
Sussman described the series as having a tone similar to that of Andor, a Star Wars political thriller, and pitched it to Paramount with Scott Bakula's involvement. However, the project was ultimately turned down due to budget cuts and perceived similarities to another upcoming Star Trek show, Starfleet Academy, which will also be set on Earth.
"We had a very clear vision for what this show could have been," Sussman said in an interview. "We wanted to explore the early days of the Federation and how it was formed, and we felt that Captain Archer's story was the perfect way to do that."
The idea for Star Trek: United originated from a brief revelation in the Enterprise season four episode "In a Mirror, Darkly," where Archer is shown as one of the first presidents of the nascent Federation. Sussman had previously described the project as an opportunity to delve deeper into the politics and history of the Star Trek universe.
While the project was not greenlit, fans are still holding onto hope that it could be revisited in the future. "The Star Trek franchise has a way of reviving old ideas and giving them new life," said Trek fan and podcaster, Amy K. Borges. "You never know when something like this might come back around."
As for what's next for the Star Trek franchise, Paramount Pictures has announced that it will be releasing several new shows and movies in the coming years, including the highly anticipated Picard series and the upcoming film, Strange New Worlds.
In related news, Scott Bakula has expressed interest in revisiting his role as Captain Archer in future projects. "I think there's still a lot of story to tell with Jonathan Archer," he said in an interview. "If the right opportunity comes along, I'd be happy to explore it further."
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Star Trek: United will ever make its way onto our screens.
