México: Los DJs de cumbia del barrio
In the heart of Monterrey, Mexico, a unique cultural phenomenon has been thriving for decades - the sonideros, or DJs who specialize in playing cumbia music. These vinyl collectors have become an integral part of the city's nightlife, bringing people together with their infectious rhythms.
According to Ivan Kashinsky, one of the photographers behind "The Picture Show México: Los DJs de cumbia del barrio," the sonideros are not just entertainers, but also keepers of a cultural tradition. "They're like the guardians of this music that has been passed down from generation to generation," he said.
The story of the sonideros in Monterrey begins with the city's history as a hub for migrant workers. Many of these workers came from Colombia, bringing with them their love of cumbia music. As they settled in Monterrey, they created their own communities, or "colonias," where they could share their culture and traditions.
One such colonia is Privada Cusco, where Brenda Cazárez celebrated her 40th birthday with a party that would be remembered for years to come. Sonido Colombia was the DJ of choice, spinning cumbia classics that got everyone on the dance floor.
The sonideros' impact goes beyond just entertainment. They have become an important part of Mexico's cultural heritage, preserving a genre of music that is deeply rooted in Latin American culture. "Cumbia is not just a style of music, it's a way of life," said Karla Gachet, another photographer behind the project.
The sonideros' influence can be seen in their ability to bring people together across cultural and social boundaries. At parties like Cazárez's birthday bash, you'll see people from all walks of life dancing together to the same beat.
Today, the sonideros continue to thrive, with new generations of DJs emerging to carry on the tradition. As Kashinsky noted, "The sonideros are not just playing music, they're keeping a piece of history alive."
As part of a larger project, "Cumbia across Latin America," this story is one of six profiles that showcase the people, places, and cultures that keep cumbia music alive in different countries. From Mexico to Colombia, Peru to Argentina, each profile offers a unique perspective on the enduring appeal of this beloved genre.
In Monterrey, the sonideros remain an integral part of the city's nightlife scene, ensuring that the spirit of cumbia continues to thrive for generations to come.
