Removing 50 Objects from Orbit Could Cut Space Junk Danger by Half
SYDNEY, Australia - A new study presented at the International Astronautical Congress has identified 50 pieces of space debris in low-Earth orbit that pose a significant threat to satellite operations and global communication networks. According to researchers, removing these objects would cut the danger from space junk in half.
The list of most concerning pieces of space debris is dominated by relics more than a quarter-century old, primarily dead rockets left to hurtle through space at the end of their missions. "Seventy-six percent of the objects in the top 50 were deposited last century," said Darren McKnight, lead author of the paper. "Eighty-eight percent of the objects are rocket bodies."
The identified objects are whizzing around the Earth at nearly 5 miles per second, flying in a heavily trafficked part of low-Earth orbit between 700 and 1,000 kilometers above the Earth. An impact with even a modestly sized object at orbital velocity would create countless pieces of debris, potentially triggering a cascading series of additional collisions.
The study's findings are particularly relevant given recent trends in space activity. "There is an increasing number of satellites being launched into orbit, and this is exacerbating the problem," said McKnight. "We need to take action to mitigate the risks associated with space junk."
Background on the issue of space debris dates back to the 1960s when the first satellites were launched into Earth's orbit. Since then, thousands of objects have been left in orbit, including dead satellites, rocket parts, and other debris.
The problem has gained international attention in recent years, with governments and organizations calling for greater responsibility from satellite operators and manufacturers. In 2019, the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) adopted guidelines for mitigating space debris.
