Renewables Overtake Coal as World's Biggest Source of Electricity
LONDON - For the first time in history, renewable energy has surpassed coal as the world's leading source of electricity, according to new data from global energy think tank Ember. In the first half of this year, renewables met 100% of the extra electricity demand worldwide, outpacing coal and gas use, which declined slightly. According to Ember, China accounted for 45% of the world's renewable energy growth in the first half of this year, followed by the US and Europe. However, the IEA warns that the US may see a slowdown in renewable growth due to the policies of President Donald Trump's administration.
Coal, a major contributor to global warming, remains the world's largest individual source of energy generation, a position it has held for more than 50 years, according to the IEA. The agency predicts that renewables will continue to grow, but at a slower pace than previously forecast.
The divide between developed and developing countries is likely to widen, with richer nations relying more heavily on fossil fuels for electricity generation. This trend is reflected in the IEA's report, which notes that the US and EU have increased their reliance on coal and gas in recent years.
