Eswatini Confirms Arrival of 10 More People as Part of US Deportation Deal
Mbabane, Eswatini - Ten individuals deported by the United States have arrived in Eswatini, according to a statement released by the government on Monday. This marks the second group of third-country nationals sent to the southern African kingdom under a deal with the Trump administration.
The deportees will be held in a secured area separate from the public while arrangements are made for their return to their countries of origin, the Eswatini government said. The statement added that it would work with the International Organization for Migration on the returns.
"This is not just about numbers; it's about people's lives," said Thandazile Nkambule, a local human rights activist. "We're concerned about their well-being and the conditions they'll be facing in Eswatini."
The first group of five men was deported from the US last month and held at the Matsapha correctional complex. Their presence sparked controversy among locals and NGOs, who argued that it was a violation of human rights.
Eswatini's government has maintained that it is complying with international agreements and providing humanitarian assistance to those in need.
"We understand the concerns raised by some stakeholders," said a government spokesperson. "However, we're committed to upholding our obligations under international law."
The US Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment on the deportations.
Critics argue that Eswatini's facilities are ill-equipped to handle the influx of new arrivals and that the country's human rights record is a concern. The government has faced criticism over its treatment of asylum seekers and refugees in the past.
The arrival of these individuals comes as Eswatini grapples with its own social issues, including poverty and unemployment. Many locals are struggling to make ends meet, and some have expressed concerns about the economic impact of hosting deportees.
"This is not a solution to our problems," said Themba Maseko, a local resident. "We need jobs and opportunities for our people, not more mouths to feed."
