Gaza Teacher Arrives in UK, Still Haunted by War-Torn Memories
Sana el-Azab, a 29-year-old former teacher from the Gaza Strip, has arrived in Durham, England, after being evacuated to the UK with 33 other students. She is set to study educational leadership and change at Durham University.
El-Azab was awarded a scholarship in June but faced weeks of uncertainty as British politicians and academics lobbied for her to be allowed into the country. On September 17, she finally left Gaza for Jordan for biometric tests before arriving in Durham late last month.
The teacher's arrival comes after months of lobbying by British officials and academics who argued that the students had already secured fully-funded places at UK universities. El-Azab is one of dozens of Gazan students who have been brought to the UK under this arrangement.
El-Azab has spoken publicly for the first time about her experiences in Gaza, describing it as "another planet" and saying that no-one can understand what she lived through during the conflict.
