New App Aims to Protect Older Adults from Online Threats
A startup founded by two sisters is developing an app designed specifically for older adults to protect them from online scams and hackers, with a launch expected within the next month. ZoraSafe, founded by Catherine Karow and Ellie King Karow, will present at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025's Startup Battlefield.
The app, which has not yet been released, is set to cost $12.99 per month for individual subscribers, with higher rates for family and group plans. According to Catherine Karow, the first version of the app will include several key features: a QR code scanner to detect malware or phishing attempts, a function to send suspicious SMS text messages and emails to ZoraSafe for review, and a feature to share known scams or threats with the app.
"We want to empower older adults to take control of their online safety," Catherine Karow said in an interview. "Our goal is to make it easy for them to stay safe without having to be tech-savvy."
The cybersecurity industry has traditionally focused on business-to-business solutions, leaving regular internet users, particularly older adults who did not grow up with the internet and smartphones, vulnerable to online threats.
ZoraSafe's approach combines protection with education through gamified microlearning. The app aims to teach users how to identify and avoid potential risks, making it a comprehensive solution for older adults' online safety.
The sisters' motivation for creating ZoraSafe stems from their own experiences helping their grandmother navigate the complexities of online security. "We saw firsthand how difficult it was for her to stay safe online," Ellie King Karow said. "We knew there had to be a better way."
ZoraSafe's participation in Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 marks an important step towards bringing this solution to market. The conference, which takes place annually, provides a platform for startups to showcase their innovations and connect with investors.
The launch of ZoraSafe is expected to address a significant gap in the cybersecurity industry, where older adults have often been overlooked. By providing a user-friendly app that combines protection and education, ZoraSafe aims to make online safety more accessible to this vulnerable demographic.
As Catherine Karow noted, "We believe that everyone deserves to be safe online, regardless of their age or technical expertise." With the launch of ZoraSafe on the horizon, it seems that this vision is about to become a reality.
