Thousands of Homes with Botched Eco Insulation 'Must Be Fixed'
A government scheme aimed at reducing energy consumption by insulating homes has been marred by widespread problems, according to a recent report from the National Audit Office (NAO). The audit found that nearly 98% of homes fitted with external wall insulation under the scheme have issues that could lead to damp and mold if left unaddressed.
Mohammed Mahedi, who had external wall insulation installed in his Luton home two years ago, is one of many homeowners affected by the botched work. "Some mornings I wake up breathing really, really heavily. I feel it in my neck. I feel it in my lungs," he said, describing the health issues he has experienced since the installation.
The NAO report revealed that nearly a third (29%) of homes with internal insulation also require remedial work. Energy Consumer Minister Martin McCluskey acknowledged the problems and assured homeowners that the government would cover the costs of repairs. "We are taking action to address these issues, and we will ensure that all affected homes are fixed at no cost to the consumer," he said.
The scheme was introduced in an effort to reduce energy consumption and lower carbon emissions. However, the NAO report highlighted significant flaws in the implementation process, including inadequate quality control measures and a lack of transparency around the installation process.
Critics argue that the government's handling of the situation has been slow and ineffective. "This is a classic example of a policy gone wrong," said Sarah Jones, a housing expert at the National Housing Federation. Mohammed Mahedi, who is still waiting for his issues to be resolved, expressed frustration with the process. "We got a scheme done that was supposed to make our lives better, but it's made them worse," he said.
The government has promised to provide additional funding to address the problems and ensure that all affected homes are fixed as soon as possible. The NAO report is expected to inform future policy decisions on energy efficiency initiatives.
