President Andry Rajoelina Flees Madagascar Amid Deadly Protests
ANTANANARIVO, MADAGASCAR - President Andry Rajoelina fled the country on Sunday to a "safe location" amid nationwide protests that have left several dead and many more injured, according to his office.
Rajoelina, 51, confirmed in a live Facebook address on Monday that he had traveled out of Madagascar following reports and rumors that he had been flown out of the country. He did not disclose his whereabouts.
The president's departure comes as protests against his government continue for a fourth week, with demonstrators calling for his resignation and an end to corruption. The unrest has resulted in at least 10 deaths and over 100 injuries, according to local reports.
"We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the President," said a spokesperson for Rajoelina's office, who wished to remain anonymous. "The situation is volatile, and we cannot guarantee his safety if he remains in Madagascar."
Rajoelina had been due to give a television address on Monday afternoon but was forced to delay it after a group of armed forces threatened to take control of the state-owned media, according to his office.
The protests began last month with demands for economic reforms, better living conditions, and an end to corruption. The demonstrators have also called for Rajoelina's resignation, citing his government's failure to address the country's deepening economic crisis.
"This is a moment of great uncertainty for Madagascar," said Dr. Lova Razafinirina, a political analyst at the University of Antananarivo. "The president's departure has left a power vacuum that could be exploited by various factions vying for control."
Rajoelina's office has denied allegations that he was planning to flee the country and accused protesters of attempting to stage a coup.
"The situation is under control, and we are working to restore order," said a spokesperson for Rajoelina's office. "We urge all parties to remain calm and avoid violence."
