Indonesian MPs Get Extra Allowance Weeks After Angry Protests Over Perks
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Thousands of protesters took to the streets in August over the excessive pay of lawmakers in Indonesia. Just weeks later, a new allowance raise has sparked fresh public anger.
According to the country's deputy house speaker, lawmakers will now receive 702 million rupiah (approximately $42,400 or €31,800) in recess allowances - nearly double the previous amount of 400 million rupiah. The increase is meant to support lawmakers carrying out their official duties during parliamentary recesses.
The protests earlier this month were triggered by a 3,000 monthly housing allowance given to lawmakers, which was nearly 10 times the minimum wage in Jakarta. These allowances were later cut in an attempt to quell anger.
"This latest decision will only fuel public discontent," said Andi Mallongi, a protester who participated in the August demonstrations. "It's clear that our lawmakers are more concerned with lining their own pockets than addressing the pressing issues facing this country."
The recess allowance is intended to cover expenses related to official duties such as visiting constituents when parliament is not in session.
"We understand that some of our colleagues may need additional support during parliamentary recesses," said Deputy House Speaker Azis Syamsuddin. "However, we also recognize the public's concerns over excessive pay and will continue to work towards finding a balance between supporting lawmakers' duties and addressing public discontent."
The protests earlier this month began as a response to the housing allowances but soon spilled into a wider protest over corruption and economic inequality in South East Asia's largest economy.
Critics argue that the latest allowance increase is a clear example of the disconnect between lawmakers and the people they represent. "It's a slap in the face for the public," said Syarifuddin, a Jakarta resident who participated in the protests. "Our lawmakers need to understand that their pay should reflect the struggles of ordinary Indonesians, not just their own interests."
The current allowance increase has sparked widespread criticism on social media and among opposition parties.
"This decision is a clear example of the government's disregard for public opinion," said Dedi Mulyadi, an opposition party leader. "We will continue to push for reforms that prioritize transparency and accountability in government spending."
As the controversy surrounding lawmakers' pay continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this latest development will impact public perception and trust in the government.
The recess allowance increase is set to take effect on October 3, with lawmakers receiving the new amount starting from their next parliamentary session.
