Madagascar's President Says Illegal Power Grab by Military is Under Way
ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar - In a dramatic turn of events, the president of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, said on Sunday that an attempt to seize power illegally and by force was underway. This comes as an elite military unit, Capsat, announced it was taking over the army after joining protesters on the streets.
According to eyewitnesses, soldiers from the Capsat unit gathered with protesters on Saturday, announcing they would refuse any orders to shoot demonstrators. The move has sparked concerns about a potential power vacuum and instability in the country.
Rajoelina, who had been accused of corruption and authoritarianism by opposition groups, said he was still in the country managing national affairs. However, his statement did little to quell fears of a military coup.
"We are not taking sides," said Captain Jean-Pierre Randrianarisoa, a spokesperson for the Capsat unit. "We are here to protect our citizens and ensure their safety."
The protests that led to this crisis began on September 25, with demonstrators calling for an end to water and electricity shortages, as well as Rajoelina's resignation. The movement quickly gained momentum, with protesters demanding a radical overhaul of the political system.
Ruphin Fortunat Zafisambo, the newly appointed prime minister, had earlier stated that the government would address the protesters' demands through dialogue. However, his words were met with skepticism by opposition groups.
The situation in Madagascar remains fluid, with both sides vying for control. The international community has called for calm and restraint, urging all parties to respect democratic principles.
