Android "Pixnapping" Attack Can Capture App Data Like 2FA Codes
A newly resurrected data-stealing attack on Android devices has left security experts sounding the alarm, as researchers have found a way to pilfer sensitive information from web browsers and other apps. Dubbed Pixnapping, this 12-year-old attack has yet to be mitigated.
According to a report by The Register, security researchers have successfully exploited the vulnerability, which allows a malicious Android application to access and leak information displayed in other Android apps or on websites. This can include sensitive data such as two-factor authentication (2FA) codes from Google Authenticator, as well as personal details from apps like Google Maps, Signal, and Venmo.
Alan Wang, a PhD candidate at UC Berkeley, explained the process behind Pixnapping: "First, the malicious app opens the target app (e.g., Google Authenticator), submitting its pixels for rendering. Second, the malicious app picks the coordinates of a target pixel whose color it wants to steal."
Wang's research highlights the potential for malicious apps to exploit this vulnerability, which can be used to capture sensitive information displayed on screen. For example, a malicious app could steal 2FA codes from Google Authenticator by targeting specific pixels on the screen.
The Pixnapping attack is not new, having been first discovered in 2011. However, its resurgence has left security experts warning of potential consequences for Android users. "This vulnerability highlights the importance of securing mobile apps and protecting sensitive information," said a spokesperson for the cybersecurity firm, Lookout.
Background research suggests that Pixnapping relies on a combination of social engineering and technical exploits to gain access to sensitive data. Malicious apps can use this technique to capture personal details from websites and other apps, which can then be used for malicious purposes.
As researchers continue to study the Pixnapping attack, experts are urging Android users to exercise caution when downloading and installing new apps. "Users should be aware of the potential risks associated with mobile apps and take steps to protect their sensitive information," said Wang.
The current status of the Pixnapping attack remains unclear, as researchers work to develop a patch or mitigation strategy. However, experts warn that the vulnerability is likely to remain unpatched until further notice.
