Competition Watchdog Demands Vets Disclose Prices, Citing Soaring Costs
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has ordered vets to publish price lists for treatments, citing a lack of transparency that's leaving pet owners in the dark. The watchdog found 84 out of 100 vet practice websites had no pricing information.
Vet prices have risen at nearly twice the rate of inflation, according to the CMA investigation. Pet owners are often unaware of costs or not given estimates for treatments that can run into thousands of pounds.
The CMA's proposals also include capping prescription fees and banning bonuses on offering specific treatments. Vets will be required to reveal if they're part of a large group.
This move comes after a BBC File on Four investigation in April highlighted skyrocketing vet bills, with whistleblowers blaming big companies buying up practices.
