Astead W. Herndon Joins Vox as Host and Editorial Director
New York Times journalist Astead W. Herndon has joined Vox as host and editorial director, effective October 20, 2025, according to a statement from Vox Communications.
Herndon will launch and lead a new multiplatform video podcast for Vox in 2026, expanding the organization's reach with video-first political storytelling. He will also contribute to Vox's text, audio, and video reporting, as well as create videos for Vox's social channels. Herndon will guest-host Vox's popular Today, Explained podcast along with Noel King this fall and winter.
"We are thrilled to welcome Astead to the Vox team," said Swati Sharma, editor-in-chief publisher of Vox. "His expertise in politics and commitment to storytelling will help our audience understand the complexities of American politics."
Herndon brings extensive experience as a journalist, having worked at The New York Times since 2018. He has covered various aspects of politics, including the 2024 presidential election and state-level legislative races.
In his new role, Herndon will play a key part in helping audiences comprehend the factors shaping the 2026 midterms and the lead-up to the 2028 presidential election. "I'm excited to join Vox and contribute to its mission of providing high-quality journalism," said Herndon. "As we head into the 2026 midterms, I believe it's essential to provide in-depth analysis and context on the issues that matter most."
Vox Communications emphasized that Herndon will be a multiplatform journalist, working across various formats to engage audiences and provide comprehensive coverage of politics.
Herndon's appointment has been met with enthusiasm from some quarters. "Astead is an exceptional journalist who brings a unique perspective to the world of politics," said Michael Schudson, professor emeritus at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. "His ability to break down complex issues into accessible language will be invaluable in helping audiences understand the intricacies of American politics."
However, some critics have raised concerns about Herndon's potential influence on Vox's editorial direction. "While Astead is a talented journalist, his appointment raises questions about the balance of perspectives within Vox," said Sarah Jones, senior editor at The New Republic. "It will be essential for Vox to maintain its commitment to diverse viewpoints and avoid perpetuating partisan narratives."
As Herndon begins his new role, he looks forward to collaborating with Vox's team to produce high-quality journalism that informs and engages audiences.
In related news, Vox has announced plans to expand its video production capabilities in 2026, with a focus on creating more interactive and immersive content. The organization aims to increase its online engagement and reach a broader audience through its multiplatform approach.
With Herndon at the helm, Vox is poised to continue its commitment to providing in-depth analysis and context on American politics. As the 2026 midterms approach, audiences can expect to see a new wave of video-first storytelling from Vox, led by Herndon's expertise and passion for journalism.
