Breaking News: Death Toll Rises in Jamaica Amid Hurricane Melissa Destruction
At least 19 people have died in Jamaica as a result of Hurricane Melissa, according to Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon. The hurricane, one of the most powerful to strike the Caribbean, has also killed at least 30 people in Haiti.
Entire communities are marooned and areas are flattened in western regions of Jamaica, with devastating scenes reported. Electricity remains out to most of the island, and thousands are growing desperate for aid.
The main airport in Kingston is largely back to normal, but smaller regional airports are still struggling to receive aid supplies. Water shortages have lasted for several days, and food is becoming increasingly scarce.
Search and rescue efforts continue, with authorities trying to get aid to hard-hit areas. The situation remains dire, with many Jamaicans struggling to access basic necessities.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
