Breaking News: Death Toll Rises in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa Devastates the Island
At least 19 people have died in Jamaica due to Hurricane Melissa, with the death toll expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. The hurricane, which has also killed at least 30 people in Haiti, has left entire communities marooned and areas flattened in western Jamaica.
Residents are struggling to salvage damaged homes and belongings from floodwaters and mud, with thousands growing increasingly desperate for aid. Electricity remains out to most of the island, and areas have been without water for several days. Food is becoming increasingly scarce.
Hurricane Melissa is one of the most powerful to strike the Caribbean, and its impact has been devastating. Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon described the scenes in western regions as "devastating." Aid supplies are starting to arrive more rapidly, with the main airport in Kingston largely back to normal. However, smaller regional airports remain a challenge.
As aid efforts continue, authorities are working to reach hard-hit areas. The situation remains dire, and the death toll is expected to rise. This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
