Breaking News: Hurricane Melissa Death Toll Rises to 28 in Jamaican Towns
At least 28 people have died in Jamaica since Hurricane Melissa struck the island five days ago, with the majority of deaths occurring in the western region. The storm made landfall on the island as a category five monster with 185 mph sustained winds.
Residents in devastated communities along the coast are still waiting for aid, with many roads blocked by debris and basic necessities like food, power, and running water scarce. Local official Dr Dayton Campbell confirmed 10 of the deaths in Westmoreland Parish, which is believed to have the second highest number of unconfirmed deaths.
The eye of the storm hit between Westmoreland and St Elizabeth, two neighboring parishes. The government is working to clear debris and reach isolated areas, but the process is slow due to the severity of the damage.
As aid efforts continue, residents are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster. The death toll is expected to rise as officials clear their way into new parts of the island. The government has yet to confirm the exact number of unconfirmed deaths.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
