Breaking News: Desperate Jamaican Towns Struggle Amid Devastating Hurricane
At least 28 people have died in Jamaica since Hurricane Melissa pummelled into western Jamaica five days ago, with 10 of those deaths confirmed in Westmoreland Parish. The hurricane made landfall as a category five storm with 185 mph sustained winds on Saturday.
Residents in devastated communities along the coast are struggling to survive with little food, no power, and no running water. Many roads are blocked by debris, isolating people and making it difficult for aid to reach them. Local officials are working to clear the way into new areas of the island, but the death toll is expected to rise.
The eye of the storm hit between Westmoreland and St Elizabeth parishes, with the latter having the highest number of unconfirmed deaths. Westmoreland Parish is believed to have the second highest number of unconfirmed deaths.
The Jamaican government is racing against time to deliver aid to the affected areas, but the situation remains dire. This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
