Breaking News: Listeria Outbreak Linked to Pasta Products Claims Six Lives, Hospitalizes 25
A deadly listeria outbreak connected to prepared pasta meals sold at grocery chains nationwide has claimed six lives and hospitalized 25 people across 18 states. The outbreak, which has been linked to national pasta products from Trader Joe's and Walmart, has resulted in a total of 27 illnesses, with one case involving a pregnant mother who suffered a fetal loss.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak began to worsen in late October, with seven new illnesses reported in three states since the last CDC case count update on September 25, 2025. The affected states include California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
Health officials have confirmed that the outbreak is linked to prepared pasta products, which have been sold at various grocery stores across the country. The CDC has urged consumers to check their pantries and refrigerators for any recalled products and to discard them immediately.
"We take this outbreak very seriously and are working closely with our partners to investigate the source of the contamination and prevent further illnesses," said a CDC spokesperson.
Listeria is a type of bacteria that can cause severe illness in vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are also at risk, as listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and premature labor.
The CDC has advised consumers to take precautions to prevent listeria infection, including:
- Checking expiration dates and recalling any expired or recalled products
- Washing hands thoroughly before and after handling food
- Cooking food to the recommended internal temperature
- Avoiding cross-contamination of food and surfaces
As the investigation continues, health officials are urging consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of listeria to their local health authorities.
In the meantime, Trader Joe's and Walmart have issued statements apologizing for the outbreak and assuring customers that they are working closely with the CDC to resolve the issue.
