Breaking News: Driver Plows into Crowd on French Island, Leaving Two Critically Injured
A driver in his mid-30s deliberately rammed his car into pedestrians and cyclists on the French island of Oléron, off the west coast of France, injuring five people. Two of the victims are in critical condition.
The incident occurred in the early afternoon, with the driver mowing down several people, including a young girl, as he drove between two villages on the island. The suspect eventually abandoned his vehicle and set fire to it before running away.
The driver, who is known to police, was arrested after being immobilized with a stun gun. He allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" at the moment of his arrest. The public prosecutor for La Rochelle has opened an inquiry into the incident, and the prosecutor will decide whether to pass on the case to anti-terrorism authorities.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has traveled to the scene and is working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The mayor of Dolus d'Oléron, Thibault Brechkoff, has confirmed that the suspect was acting deliberately.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
