Breaking News: Keir Starmer Slams "Catastrophic" Mistaken Prison Releases
Two prisoners, Billy Smith and Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, were mistakenly released from Wandsworth Prison in London. One has handed himself in, but the other, an Algerian sex offender, remains at large.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed "anger and frustration" over the releases, which he calls "intolerable." He blames the strain on the prison system on the "failures" of the previous government.
The mistaken releases come just a month after a migrant sex offender was accidentally released from Chelmsford prison in Essex. Justice Secretary David Lammy had promised stronger checks to prevent such errors.
A review is underway to determine what went wrong. Conservative shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has called the situation a "total shambles" and urged the government to "get a grip."
This is a developing story.
