According to recent polls, a significant number of American voters who signed up for stricter immigration policies did not intend for the measures to target law-abiding citizens, such as elderly individuals and families. The discrepancy between voter intentions and the actual impact of the policies has raised concerns among immigration advocates and lawmakers.
The shift in public opinion on immigration is evident in a Gallup poll, which found that 30 percent of Americans want immigration decreased, a decline from 55 percent a year ago. However, a New York Times/Siena College poll revealed that 61 percent of voters who supported President Donald Trump's immigration policies in the 2024 election believed that the measures should focus on deporting undocumented immigrants, not law-abiding citizens.
Immigration advocates argue that the policies have resulted in the deportation of thousands of individuals who are not a threat to national security. "We're seeing a lot of families being torn apart, and it's not just the undocumented immigrants who are being affected," said Maria Rodriguez, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center. "We're seeing elderly individuals, veterans, and individuals with disabilities being deported, and it's just heartbreaking."
The policies were implemented by President Trump, who boosted funding for immigration enforcement, opened new detention centers, and deployed more Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) troops into US cities. The measures were aimed at reducing immigration and enforcing stricter border control.
However, immigration experts argue that the policies have not been effective in reducing immigration and have instead led to a humanitarian crisis. "The policies have been a failure, and it's not just because of the deportations," said Dr. John Miano, a professor of immigration law at the University of California, Los Angeles. "The policies have also led to a surge in asylum seekers and a backlog in the immigration court system."
The current status of the policies remains unclear, as lawmakers continue to debate the issue. The Biden administration has announced plans to reform the immigration system, but the details of the proposal are still unclear. Immigration advocates are calling for a more humane approach to immigration enforcement, while lawmakers are pushing for stricter measures to reduce immigration.
In a statement, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "The administration is committed to reforming the immigration system to ensure that it is fair, efficient, and effective. We will continue to work with lawmakers to find a solution that works for everyone."
