Breaking News: Algerian Man Recaptured After Shocking Prison Release Mix-Up
Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a 24-year-old Algerian sex offender, has been arrested by police in London just 10 minutes ago. He was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in south London on October 29, sparking a major manhunt.
Kaddour-Cherif was spotted by a member of the public in the Finsbury Park area of London just before 11:30 GMT on Friday. He is now back in custody, along with William Smith, who handed himself in on Thursday.
This is the second prisoner released in error from HMP Wandsworth in the same week. At least four other prisoners released in error are still at large, according to sources.
The incident highlights a growing concern over prisoner releases in error. In the year to March, 262 prisoners in England and Wales were mistakenly released, up from 115 the previous year.
The Justice Secretary, David Lammy, is under pressure to explain the circumstances surrounding the releases. Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has criticized the government's handling of the situation, calling it "incompetent".
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
