Breaking News: Super Typhoon Bears Down on Philippines, 1 Million Flee
Over 900,000 people have been evacuated in the Philippines ahead of Typhoon Fung-wong, which is expected to make landfall on Sunday evening. The storm has been upgraded to a super typhoon with sustained winds of 185 kmh (115mph) and gusts of 230kmh (143mph).
The eastern Bicol region has already been hit by the storm, with Luzon, the country's main population centre, expected to be hit by Sunday night. Several schools have cancelled classes on Monday or moved them online, while nearly 300 flights have been cancelled.
The Philippines is still reeling from the effects of a previous storm, Kalmaegi, which left nearly 200 people dead and a trail of destruction. The country's meteorological service has warned of an "absolutely massive storm" as Fung-wong approaches.
Fung-wong is expected to weaken after making landfall somewhere between the districts of Baler and Casiguran, but it is likely to remain a typhoon as it travels. The storm's exact path and intensity are still uncertain, but authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
