Breaking News: Super Typhoon Fung-wong Bears Down on Philippines, 900,000 Flee for Safety
A powerful super typhoon is barreling down on the Philippines, with over 900,000 people evacuated in a desperate bid for safety. Typhoon Fung-wong, also known as Uwan, is expected to make landfall on Sunday evening with sustained winds of 185 kmh (115mph) and gusts of 230kmh (143mph).
The storm is forecast to bring a "high-risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surge" with peak heights exceeding 3m (10ft) as it moves north-westerly across Luzon, the country's most populous island. The eastern Bicol region was the first to be hit on Sunday morning, with the storm expected to pass the Polillo Islands on Sunday afternoon.
This comes just days after a previous storm, Kalmaegi, left a trail of destruction and nearly 200 people dead. Several schools have cancelled classes on Monday or moved them online, while residents are bracing for the worst.
The Philippines' meteorological service has issued a warning, urging people to seek shelter immediately. The full extent of the damage is yet to be seen, but the situation is dire.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
