Breaking News: GOP States to Suffer Biggest Blows if Affordable Care Act Subsidies Expire
The Affordable Care Act subsidies are set to expire, and analysts warn that this will disproportionately affect Republican states, particularly in the South. As the longest-ever federal government shutdown continues, Democrats are pushing for an extension of the subsidies, while Republicans want to let them expire at the end of the year.
The online marketplace for ACA health plans is already pricing in rates without the subsidies, with open enrollment for coverage in 2026 beginning this month. According to the nonpartisan health policy research group KFF, premiums have more than doubled on average, due to the ACA subsidies expiring and insurers hiking rates. This is a significant increase from previous years, with average premiums rising from $400 to over $1,000 per month.
The impact of expiring subsidies will be felt most acutely in states with high concentrations of low-income residents, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Tennessee. In an October 23 note, Oxford Economics senior U.S. economist Matthew Martin pointed out that more than half of the states that would be most affected by the expiration of subsidies are Republican-controlled.
The immediate impact of the expiring subsidies is already being felt, with many residents in these states struggling to afford health insurance. According to a recent survey, nearly 60% of respondents in these states reported that they would be unable to afford health insurance if the subsidies expire.
The Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010 by President Barack Obama, with the goal of increasing healthcare access and affordability for millions of Americans. The law introduced subsidies to help low-income individuals and families purchase health insurance through online marketplaces.
As the government shutdown continues, the fate of the ACA subsidies remains uncertain. If the subsidies expire, millions of Americans will be left without access to affordable health insurance, with the most vulnerable populations bearing the brunt of the impact.
