Breaking News: Government Cracks Down on Driving Test Cheats with New Anti-Bot Legislation
The UK government has introduced new measures to tackle the driving test backlog and prevent online bots from reselling test slots at inflated prices. As of now, only learner drivers will be allowed to book driving tests.
This move aims to stop people being "exploited" by online bots, according to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander. The average waiting time for driving tests currently stands at 21.8 weeks, with the backlog growing after the COVID-19 lockdown.
The government has also announced plans to bring in examiners from the Ministry of Defence to help reduce the backlog. 36 MoD driving examiners will conduct tests one day a week for a year, at an estimated cost of £100,000.
The Department for Transport has recruited 316 new examiners to support the effort. While the new measures are expected to have an impact, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander admitted that waiting times will not be brought down to seven weeks by summer 2026 as previously hoped.
This is a developing story, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
