Breaking News: Council Visits Wrong House Before Teen's Murder, Raising Alarming Questions
Surrey County Council staff visited the wrong address the day before 10-year-old Sara Sharif was murdered by her father and stepmother in Woking, Surrey, on August 10, 2023. The council has apologized for the mistake, which has raised serious concerns about the handling of child safeguarding cases.
The council's child safeguarding practice review found that Sara's father and stepmother were a "lethal combination" and that the "seriousness and significance of Sharif as a serial perpetrator of domestic abuse was overlooked." Sara was subjected to two years of abuse, including being hooded, burned, and beaten, before her body was discovered.
This shocking revelation comes as a result of a review into how organizations worked together in the lead-up to Sara's murder. The review identified several areas for improvement, which the council has promised to address.
Surrey County Council has taken "robust action" to address the findings and will work to implement every recommendation in full. The council's apology and commitment to change are a step in the right direction, but the community is still reeling from the devastating loss of Sara.
This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
