Breaking News: Council's Blunder Exposed in Sara Sharif Murder Case
Surrey County Council staff visited the wrong house before 10-year-old Sara Sharif's murder, a review has found. Sara's body was discovered at her home in Woking, Surrey, on August 10, 2023. Her father, Urfan Sharif, 43, and stepmother, Beinash Batool, 30, were jailed for life for her murder.
The council's blunder occurred the day before Sara's murder, when staff attempted to check on her but went to the wrong address. This is a critical failure that has raised serious concerns about the council's child safeguarding practices.
A child safeguarding practice review published on Thursday found that Surrey County Council failed to properly investigate why Sara started wearing a hijab to cover unexplained bruising. The review also revealed that services in Surrey failed to identify Sara as a risk of abuse.
Surrey County Council has apologized for the findings and said it has taken robust action to address them. The council will work to implement every recommendation in full.
This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
