Breaking News: Council Accused of Visiting Wrong House Before Fatal Murder
Surrey County Council staff visited the wrong address the day before 10-year-old Sara Sharif was murdered by her father and stepmother in Woking, Surrey, in August 2023. The council's failure to properly investigate Sara's abuse led to her tragic death.
Sara's body was discovered at her home on August 10, 2023, after her father, Urfan Sharif, 43, and stepmother, Beinash Batool, 30, were jailed for life for her murder. A review found that Surrey County Council failed to identify Sara as a risk of abuse and did not question unexplained bruising on her body.
The review, published on Thursday, revealed that the council failed to properly investigate why Sara started wearing a hijab to cover the bruising, fearing it would cause offense. Surrey County Council has apologized for the findings and promised to implement every recommendation in full.
The council has taken "robust action" to address the findings and will work to implement every recommendation in full. The child safeguarding practice review has highlighted serious failings in the council's procedures.
This is a developing story. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
