Breaking News: BBC Apologizes to Trump, Refuses Compensation Amid Ongoing Editing Controversy
The BBC has apologized to US President Donald Trump for a Panorama episode that spliced parts of his January 6, 2021, speech together, giving a "mistaken impression" of a call for violent action. The corporation has refused Trump's demands for compensation.
This decision comes after Trump's lawyers threatened to sue the BBC for $1 billion in damages unless the corporation issued a retraction, apologized, and compensated him. The fallout from the scandal led to the resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness on Sunday.
The BBC reviewed the Panorama programme after criticism of the editing, and the corporation has stated it will not show the 2024 programme again. A second similarly edited clip, broadcast on Newsnight in 2022, was revealed by the Daily Telegraph earlier this week.
The BBC has approached the White House for comment, but no response has been received. This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
