Breaking News: Multiple Fatalities Reported as Migrant Boats Sunk in Mediterranean
At least four people have died after two migrant boats capsized off the coast of Libya on Saturday, with rescue workers confirming the fatalities among Bangladeshi nationals. The boats, carrying nearly 100 migrants, were using the central Mediterranean route between North Africa and Italy, a route known as the deadliest known migration route in the world.
The Libyan Red Crescent reported that four people have died, all of whom were passengers in a boat carrying 26 Bangladeshi nationals. The organization did not confirm further fatalities among passengers in a second boat, which sank while carrying around 70 mostly Sudanese people.
The boats had set off from Al Khums, a port city in northwestern Libya. Hundreds of people die each year trying to make the crossing to southern Europe in overcrowded and unsafe boats.
Rescue workers are currently administering aid to survivors, with images shared by the Libyan Red Crescent showing their crew providing assistance. The situation remains dire, with the possibility of further fatalities still uncertain.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
