Breaking News: Multiple Fatalities Reported as Migrant Boats Sunk in Mediterranean
At least four people have died after two boats carrying nearly 100 migrants capsized off the coast of Libya on Saturday. The incidents occurred in the central Mediterranean route between North Africa and Italy, which is the deadliest known migration route in the world, according to the UN International Organization for Migration.
The Libyan Red Crescent has confirmed four fatalities among passengers in a boat carrying 26 Bangladeshi nationals. The second boat, carrying around 70 mostly Sudanese people, is believed to have sunk as well, but the number of fatalities remains unknown.
The boats had set off from Al Khums, a port city in northwestern Libya, and were headed for southern Europe. Hundreds of people die each year trying to make this crossing in overcrowded and unsafe boats.
Rescue workers are currently administering aid to survivors, with images shared by the Libyan Red Crescent showing its crew providing assistance. The situation is being closely monitored by international organizations and local authorities.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
