Breaking News: Competition Watchdog Launches Probe into Eight Firms Over Online Price Fixing
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a sweeping probe into eight companies over allegations of online price fixing. The investigation, which began today, targets StubHub, Viagogo, AA Driving School, BSM Driving School, Gold's Gym, Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Marks Electrical.
The CMA is looking into practices such as mandatory additional charges, time-limited sales, and automatic opt-ins. The regulator is also writing to 100 businesses to express concerns about their use of additional fees and sales tactics.
The investigation comes after a major review that has been ongoing since April. CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said, "At a time when household budgets are under constant pressure, it's crucial that people can shop online with confidence, knowing the price they see is the price they'll pay."
The probe marks the first use of new consumer protection powers by the CMA. The regulator is expected to provide updates on the investigation in the coming weeks.
This is a developing story. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
