Breaking News: Competition Watchdog Launches Probe into Eight Firms Over Online Price Fixing
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched investigations into eight companies, including StubHub and Viagogo, over alleged online price fixing practices. The probe was announced today, and the companies are accused of using tactics such as mandatory additional charges, time-limited sales, and automatic opt-ins.
The companies being investigated are StubHub, Viagogo, AA Driving School, BSM Driving School, Gold's Gym, Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Marks Electrical. The CMA is also writing to 100 businesses to express concerns about their use of additional fees and sales tactics.
The investigation comes after a major review by the CMA, which has been ongoing since April. The review aimed to identify potential issues with online pricing practices and ensure consumers can shop online with confidence.
The CMA's chief executive, Sarah Cardell, said: "At a time when household budgets are under pressure, it's crucial that people can shop online with confidence, knowing the price they see is the price they'll pay, and any sales are genuine."
The investigation is the first launched by the CMA under new consumer protection powers. The outcome of the probe is uncertain, and the CMA has not specified a timeline for its completion.
This is a developing story. The CMA will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
